National Football League (NFL) ratings have fallen for two consecutive years, with a potential reason being the frequency of player protests. The teams collectively experienced their largest drop in attendance in 34 years, while ratings declined across multiple networks. Regular season games on ABC and CBS were down 18 percent and 10 percent, respectively. Meanwhile, the National Basketball Association (NBA), one of the most politicized professional sports leagues with its outspoken coaches and players, is experiencing a significant ratings increase.

As of December 21 ESPN and TNT, the NBA's two major broadcast partners, experienced average viewership increases of 18 and 25 percent, respectively. Ratings were still going strong as of February 11, with the ABC broadcast of the Cleveland Cavaliers versus the Boston Celtics delivering the fourth-highest ratings of the season with a 3.6 metered-market rating, which represented a 57 percent increase from a San Antonio and New York game the same time last year. It was also ABC's highest-rated Sunday broadcast since 2015.
